We're Just Beginning

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite…”

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed,we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds,we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all,we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past. I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder of our lives.

The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers,in our homes and in our business,if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

Don’t Make the era More and More Indifferent

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints; we spend more, but have less; we buy more but enjoy less.

We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life; we’ve added years to life, not life to years.

We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space; we’ve done larger things, but not better things.

We’ve cleaned up the air,but polluted the soul; we’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less; we plan more, but accomplish less.

We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait; we have higher incomes, but, lower morals.

We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication; we’ve become long on quantity, but short on quality.

These are the days of two incomes, but more divorce; of fancier houses, but more broken homes.

These are the days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throw away morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer,to quiet,to kill. Where are we heading...?

If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And come to think of it,we pour ourselves more into work than to our family an unwise investment indeed.

So what is the morale of the story?

Don’t work too hard... and you know what’s the full word of family?

FAMILY = (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER,(I) (L)OVE (Y)OU.

Fifty-percent Expectation

I believe in the "50-percent theory". Half the time things are better than normal; the other half, they are worse. I believe life is a pendulum swing. It takes time and experience to understand what normal is,and that gives me the perspective to deal with the surprises of the future.

Let's benchmark the parameters: Yes,I will die. I've dealt with the deaths of both parents,a best friend,a beloved boss and cherished pets. Some of these deaths have been violent, before my eyes,or slow and agonizing. Bad stuff, and it belongs at the bottom of the scale.

Then there are those high points: romance and marriage to the right person; having a child and doing those Dad things like coaching my son's baseball team, paddling around the creek in the boat while he's swimming with the dogs, discovering his compassion so deep it manifests even in his kindness to snails, his imagination so vivid he builds a spaceship from a scattered pile of Legos.

But there is a vast meadow of life in the middle, where the bad and the good flip-flop acrobatically. This is what convinces me to believe in the 50-percent theory.

One spring I planted corn too early in a bottomland so flood-prone that neighbors laughed. I felt chagrined at the wasted effort. Summer turned brutal-- the worst heat wave and drought in my lifetime. The air-conditioner died, the well went dry,the marriage ended, the job lost, the money gone. I was living lyrics from a country tune -- music I loathed. only a surging Kansas CityRoyals team, bound for their first World Series, buoyed my spirits.

Looking back on that horrible summer,I soon understood that all succeeding good things merely offset the bad. Worse than normal wouldn't last long. I am owed and savor the halcyon times. They reinvigorate me for the next nasty surprise and offer assurance that I can thrive. The 50 percent theory even helps me see hope beyond my Royals' recent slump,a field of struggling rookies sown so that some year soon we can reap an October harvest.

Oh,yeah, the corn crop? For that one blistering summer, the ground moisture was just right, planting early allowed pollination before heat, withered the tops, and the lack of rain spared the standing corn from floods. That winter my crib overflowed with corn -- fat, healthy three-to-a-stalk ears filled with kernels from heel to tip -- while my neighbors' fields yielded only brown, empty husks.

Although plantings past may have fallen below the 50-percent expectation, and they probably will again in the future,I am still sustained by the crop that flourishes during the drought.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will,a quality of the imagination,a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a tempera-mental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry,fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16,there is in every human being‘s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what‘s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite,so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20,but as long as your aerials are up,to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.

John and Bobby joined a wholesale company togther just after graduation from college the same year. Both worked very hard. After several years, however, the boss promoted Bobby to theposotion of manager but John remained an ordinary employee. John could not take it anymore, tendered his resignation to the boss and complained the boss did not know how to delegate and did not value hard working staff, but only promoted those who flattered him.

The boss knew that John worked very hard for the years. He thought a moment and said,"Thank you for your criticism, but I have a request. I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. Perhaps you will change your decision and take back your resignation."

John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find out anyone selling watermelon in the market. John went and returned soon. He said he had found out a man selling watermelon. The boss asked how much per kg? John shook his head and went back to the market to ask and returned to inform the boss $1.2 per kg.

Boss told John to wait a second, and he called Bobby to come to his office. He asked Bobby to go and find anyone seling watermelon in the market. Bobby went, returned and said, boss, only one person selling watermelon. $1.2 per kg,$10 for 10kg,he has inventory of 340 melons. On the table 58 melons, every melon weights about 2 kg,bought from the South two days ago, they are fresh and red, good quality.

John was very impresed and realized the difference between himself and Bobby. He decided not to resign but to learn from Bobby.

My dear friends,a more successful person is more observant, thinks more and explores in depth. Chances exists in the daily details. For the same matter,a more successful person sees more and farther so that he can find out an opportunity and catch it to realize his aim. If a person sees one year ahead, while another sees only tomorrow. The difference between a year and a day is 365times,how could you win?

Sitting on the drippy, cold steps of Penn Station, sharing a smoke with a boyfriend. This Saturday night is scattered with drunks, and for once,we are not the drunkest; we do not smell the worst. Late-night,paranoid tourists don’t even stare—a few ask for directions. We are spreading our wet, waiting bodies all over that stone, watching stumbling silhouettes wrestle with the escalator.

She shuffles up the steps with the last of her strength. Her pink sweatpants are tinged with brown, and her feet are buried in city-stained bunny slippers. Her eyes look like they’ve seen so much sadness they’re forever doomed to apathy. They are eyes dazed with the work it takes to stay warm, and weary of the excess of privileged people. I’m looking at those glass eyes and thinking that she reeks of survival; that I’m too cold to move, and all I’m doing is waiting for the first train home.

Out comes her wrinkled, begging hand. We turn out our pockets and find nothing. The mouth of the station swallows her descending, dejected frame.

Light another smoke. We are pushing reluctant time forward as it digs its heels in at the dusty smells and sounds of old stories,at the sucking of smoke,at our involuntary shivers.

She’s back again. The wrinkled hand, heavy with pleading,is now answering.

She drops four warm quarters into my palm and says,“Get yourselves a cup of coffee. Merry Christmas.”

The station gulps her up again before we can say thank you.

The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and jostled the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age." Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the others. Someone said,"Come on,Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment."

Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. "I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the other kids that were still at home." He looked at us and said,"I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man,and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him,he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas,foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish."

Frank's voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for blocks. As he would drive toward the school,I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time,he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing for me. Here,I was twelve years old,and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye!"

He paused and then went on,"I remember the day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to the school and came to a stop,he had his usual big smile. He started to lean toward me,but I put my hand up and said,'No,Dad.'

It was the first time I had ever talked to him that way,and he had this surprised look on his face. I said,'Dad,I'm too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss.' My Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked out the windshield. 'You're right,' he said. 'You are a big boy....a man. I won't kiss you anymore.'"

Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes,as he spoke. "It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to sea and never came back. It was a day when most of the fleet stayed in,but not Dad. He had a big family to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out. He must have gotten into a gale and was trying to save the nets and the floats."

I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke again. "Guys, you don't know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one more kiss on the cheek....to feel his rough old face....to smell the ocean on him....to feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man,I would never have told my Dad I was too old for a goodbye kiss."

Friendship is indispensable to people's life. A man without friends is an angel without wings, whose life will suffer in the long tolerance of loneliness and depression. Friendship is the mother of our psyche, who'll warm her kid when hurt occurs. We have much to share with our friends in life, perplexity, excitement, bitterness etc. Alas,it's magnificent to maintain a genuine friendship.

It takes many special qualities to make a friend. Understanding should come first. only when we get a better understanding of each other can we gain an authentic and meaningful friendship. We may find our hobbies of common interests. This feeling of affinity gets us closer and closer.

It also takes a special kind of love that seems to know no end. Never hesitate to show your heartfelt care and kindness to your friend when he/she is in trouble. Love is not selfish. Love is endowed by God that we should treasure all our life.

Tolerance is the third essential part in friendship. We are absolutely different persons. This individual distinction may cause conflict between us in every aspect of our life. Don't immerse ourselves in this infliction too long. Try to tolerant his/her in an introspective mood. Saints are not perfect, let alone those ordinary people like us. Afterwards,we should get a good communication. Never shy to confess.

Understanding, love and tolerance are the first three essences that comes to an authentic friendship. Other qualities are also concerned such as thoughtfulness, trust and patience. Remember, friendship is your psyche's guard, treasure it.

Then is over; this is now. The less time and effort you put into looking at the past, the more you will have for living and experiencing this day. You will also find that letting go of the past will give you a deeper sense of strength. Instead of allowing past mistakes and worries to drain your energies, you will have a renewed energy to live your life to the fullest and enjoy it more.

Being content with yourself and optimistic about your future is not difficult. Whatever is in the past is over; learn from it and move on. When you are self-motivated enough to do this, you will see that moving ahead is the best definition of living life.

With that said, what can you do now? Sure it is easy for me to tell you to forget the past, yet it is a whole different practice to actually do it. Life is a complex set of events much of which of course is real, yet a large amount is just your view of what really happened.

The thermometer had dropped to 18 degrees below zero, but still chose to sleep in the porch as usual. In the evening, the most familiar sight to me would be stars in the sky. Though they were a mere sprinkle of twinkling dots, yet I had become so accustomed to them that their occasional absence would bring me loneliness and ennui.

It had been snowing all night, not a single star in sight. My roommate and I,each wrapped in a quilt, were seated far apart in a different corner of the porch, facing each other and chatting away.

She exclaimed pointing to something afar,“Look,Venus in rising!” I looked up and saw nothing but a lamp round the bend in a mountain path. I beamed and said pointing to a tiny lamplight on the opposite mountain,“It’s Jupiter over there!”

More and more lights came into sight as we kept pointing here and there. Lights from hurricane lamps flickering about in the pine forest created the scene of a star-studded sky. With the distinction between sky and forest obscured by snowflakes, the numerous lamp-lights now easily passed for as many stars.

Completely lost in a make-believe world,I seemed to see all the lamplights drifting from the ground. With the illusory stars hanging still overhead,I was spared the effort of tracing their positions when I woke up from my dreams in the dead of night.

Thus I found consolation even on a lonely snowy night !

When Love Beckons You

When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,so shall he descend to our roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

But if,in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but it self and takes naught but from itself.

Love possesses not,nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these be your desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

被自己对爱的理解所伤害;

在黎明带着轻快的心醒来并感谢又一个有家的日子;

在黄昏怀着感恩之心回家;

Be Happy!

“The days that make us happy make us wise.”----John Masefield

when I first read this line by England’s Poet Laureate,it startled me. What did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much,I had always assumed that the opposite was true.

But his sober assurance was arresting. I could not forget it.

Finally,I seemed to grasp his meaning and realized that here was a profound observation. The wisdom that happiness makes possible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused by fear.

Active happiness——not mere satisfaction or contentment ---often comes suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud.

Then you discover what kind of wisdom has accompanied it. The grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the shortcomings of your friends are more understandable and more forgivable.

Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual vision.

Nor are the insights of happiness limited to what is near around you. Unhappy, with your thoughts turned in upon your emotional woes, your vision is cut short as though by a wall.

Happy,the wall crumbles.

The long vista is there for the seeing. The ground at your feet, the world about you----people,thoughts,emotions,pressures---are now fitted into the larger scene.

Everything assumes a fairer proportion. And here is the beginning of wisdom.

The Goodness of Life

Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far,far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at times be overshadowed,it is never outweighed.

For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion.

For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their lives to helping and to healing.

There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.

In the most magnificent vistas and in the smallest details, look closely, for that goodness always comes shining through.

There si no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.

Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be cov ered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes, open your heart, and you will see that goodness is everywhere.

Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer setbacks,it always endures. For in the darkest moment it becomes vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure.

And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very things that would oppose it.

Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away.

Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.

Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and calm your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another.

For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.

Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

Researchers have found that migrating animals use a variety of inner compasses to help themnavigate. Some steer by the position of the Sun. Others navigate by the stars. Some use theSun as their guide during the day and then switch to star navigation by night. One studyshows that the homing pigeon uses the Earth's magnetic fields as a guide in finding its wayhome and there are indications that various other animals from insects to mollusks, can alsomake use of magnetic compasses. It is of course very useful for a migrating bird to be able toswitch to a magnetic compass when clouds cover the Sun; otherwise it would just have toland and wait for the Sun to come out again.

Even with the Sun or stars to steer by,the problems of navigation are more complicatedthan they might seem at first. For example,a worker honeybee that has found a rich source ofnectar and pollen flies rapidly home to the hive to report. A naturalist has discovered that thebee scout delivers her report through a complicated dance in the hive,in which she tells theother workers not only how far away the food is,but also what direction to fly in relation to theSun. But the Sun does not stay in one place all day. As the workers start out to gather thefood, the Sun may already have changed its position in the sky somewhat. In later trips duringthe day,the Sun will seem to move farther and farther toward the west. Yet the worker beesseem to have no trouble at all in finding the food source. Their inner clocks tell them just wherethe Sun will be and they change their course correspondingly.

Sand and Stone

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped felt hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "Today my best friend slapped me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning,he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend saved my life."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him,"After I hurt you,you wrote in the sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us,we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Dream What You Dream of

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real!

When the door of happiness closes, another opens, but often times we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one which has been opened for us.

Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile.

Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be,because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Getting behind the Creative Mind

The world is but a canvas to the imagination.

——Henry David Thoreau

Creativity is not,as some would have us believed, something to be taken lightly.More than painting pictures or composing original music—creativity could rightly be considered a healing force for societies overwhelmed by the ongoing utilitarian struggles of humanity.Call it a cure for depression,an escape from working—class drudgery, catharsis for the stress and worry that accumulates within us all.Or just call it a fun and productive way to wile away an afternoon.

But the spark of creativity is not always easily lit.As children, our creative zeal is generally encouraged and allowed to thrive, but as we move into adulthood that zeal tends to atrophy from neglect.Other things take over our lives, such as hectic career schedules and increased social pressure to achieve "status".According to Elisabeth Keating inPieces of Beauty, this is an unhealthy trend spawned from an overly materialistic culture. She gose on to detail the spiritual benefits of a more creative life.

Tongue in cheek,Melvin Durai exposes creativity from a more "everyday" and practical angle in his humorous piece,Let the Beer Come to You.Not only have great minds invented personal computers and cell phone technology, they might also bless us with beertossing refrigerators and couches that spit out lost remote controls.

Melvin Durai

Clearly, the expression of artistic creativity throughout history has been just a instrumental in improving the human condition as any business venture or economic boom.Without it there would be no great works of art to enjoy and puzzle over,no songs to sing badly in the shower,no ho new fashion trends,no novels to read.I ask you,is that the sort of world you want to live in?

Graduation and Moving On

At least once a year, there are a lot of graduations. It’s a time when a lot of people move on,from where they were,to another school or another class,or out into a real world. To graduate means to take a step forward,to move onward.I can remember my high school graduation,my graduation from university, and even my graduation from graduated school. Each of those graduations was nice.I took pictures,I got flowers,I hug my parents.I had the motions to moving on,I want to stay and have more fun.But I also want to move on.When we hear the word graduation,we naturally think of graduating from school. But I think it’s possible to graduate from different places,or stages in life.I worked in a company in New York for about three years. In one point I felt I couldn’t learn anything else from the company, where the people I was working with. Then I had hit a ceiling,I felt that was time to move on.The way that I describe that moving on is a graduation. Some times we are thrown out into the world or to the next level, whether we are ready or not.Other times we get the truth when we want to move on.I have experienced both.I preferred the second one, where I have a choice,I like the truth when and how,but we don’t always get what we want, since we can learn from every experience that we have, each experience can be a stepping stone for us to be better people.I know that I take lessons with me every time I graduated, but some times I can be a slow learner.I wonder when my next graduation is going to be.

The Road to Success
It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinatepositions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrustupon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spentthe first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors andjanitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch ofbusiness education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boywho has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of thosesweepers myself.

Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started,my advice to you is “aimhigh”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partneror the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as headclerk,or foreman,or general manager in any concern,no matter how extensive. Say toyourself,“My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams.

And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun inone line, resolve to fight it out on that line,to lead in it,adopt every improvement, have thebest machinery, and know the most about it.

The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they havescattered their brains also. They have investments in this,or that,or the other, here there, andeverywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggsin one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do thatnot often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too manybaskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one onhis head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lackof concentration.

To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touchliquor,or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cashfund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put allyour eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, benot impatient, for as Emerson says,“no one can cheat you out of ultimate success butyourselves.”

On Meeting the Celebrated
I have always wondered at the passion many people have to meet the celebrated. Theprestige you acquire by being able to tell your friends that you know famous men proves onlythat you are yourself of small account. The celebrated develop a technique to deal with thepersons they come across. They show the world a mask, often an impressive on,but takecare to conceal their real selves. They play the part that is expected from them, and withpractice learn to play it very well, but you are stupid if you think that this public performanceof theirs corresponds with the man within.

I have been attached, deeply attached,to a few people; but I have been interested in men ingeneral not for their own sakes, but for the sake of my work. I have not,as Kant enjoined, regarded each man as an end in himself, but as material that might be useful to me as a writer.I have been more concerned with the obscure than with the famous. They are more oftenthemselves. They have had no need to create a figure to protect themselves from the world orto impress it. Their idiosyncrasies have had more chance to develop in the limited circle oftheir activity, and since they have never been in the public eye it has never occurred to themthat they have anything to conceal. They display their oddities because it has never struckthem that they are odd. And after all it is with the common run of men that we writers have todeal; kings, dictators, commercial magnates are from our point of view very unsatisfactory. To write about them is a venture that has often tempted writers, but the failure that hasattended their efforts shows that such beings are too exceptional to form a proper ground fora work of art. They cannot be made real. The ordinary is the writer’s richer field. Itsunexpectedness, its singularity, its infinite variety afford unending material. The great manis too often all of a piece; it is the little man that is a bundle of contradictory elements. He isinexhaustible. You never come to the end of the surprises he has in store for you. For my partI would much sooner spend a month on a desert island with a veterinary surgeon than with aprime minister.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he foryour pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches thatquiver in the sun,so shall he descend to our roots and shake them in their clinging to theearth.

But if,in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better foryou that you cover

your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,into the seasonless world where youshall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love gives naughtbut it self and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not,nor would it be possessed, forlove is sufficient unto love.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must have desires, let these beyour desires:

To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.

To know the pain of too much tenderness.

To be wounded by your own understanding of love;

And to bleed willingly and joyfully.

To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;

To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;

To return home at eventide with gratitude;

And then to sleep with a payer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon yourlips.

被自己对爱的理解所伤害;

在黎明带着轻快的心醒来并感谢又一个有家的日子;

在黄昏怀着感恩之心回家;

Control Your Emotion

You must control and direct your emotions not abolish them. Besides, abolition would be antimissile task. Emotions are like a river. Their power can be dammed up and released under control and direction, but is cannot be held forever in check. Sooner or later the dam will burst, unleashing catastrophic destruction.

Your negative emotions can also be controlled and directed. PMA and self-discipline can remove their harmful effects and make them serve constructive purposes. Sometimes fear and anger will inspire intense action. But you must always submit your negative emotions--and you positive ones--to the examination of your reason before releasing them. Emotion without reason is a dreadful enemy.

What faculty provides the crucial balance between emotions and reason? It is your willpower,or ego,a subject which will be explored in more detail below. Self-discipline will teach you to throw your willpower behind either reason or emotion and amplify the intensity of their expression.

Both your heart and your mind need a master, and they can find the master in your ego. However, your ego will fill their role only if you use self-discipline. In the absence of self-discipline,your mind and heart will fight their battles as they please. In this situation the person within whose mind the fight is carried out often gets badly hurt.

The Talent Code

The 10,000-Hour Rule says that you need approximately 10,000 hours of practice to become a world-class expert in a field. There is no other way: if you want to be a world-class expert in your field, you must do your 10,000 hours of practice.

Then, where should you invest my 10,000 hours of practice?

This question is important because 10,000 hours is a lot of time. If you consistently practice 4 hours a day for 6 days a week, you will still need 8 years to get 10,000 hours. So answering this question is essential. If you need to invest such a huge amount of time, you’d better do it right. You’d better find your niche.

To find your niche,I find the three questions below helpful. Answer them and you will have an idea of where you should go. Here they are:

1. Where have you invested your time?

One way to know where to invest your time is simply to look at where you have invested your time. For example,in the last few years you might have learned how to play music for one or two hours a day. Or you might have blogged about a certain topic. Or you might have spent a lot of time on gardening.

Those are good signs of where you should invest your 10,000 hours. You already invest part of that 10,000 hours so you only need to invest the rest. The difference is now you do it consciously and deliberately. You will be more effective that way.

2. What are your passions?

In fact, that’s one reason why 10,000 hours is a magic number to become a world-class expert: almost everyone else fails before reaching that point. only a few people can reach the 10,000 hours mark and that’s why they become world class.

To help you reach the 10,000 hours mark, doing something you love is really helpful. It will help you go through difficult times. It will help you overcome boredom. Without it,the 10,000 hours will feel like a painful journey. It’s highly unlikely that you will ever reach the 10,000 hours mark that way。

3. What opportunities does the age give you?

Ask yourself: what opportunities does your birth date give you? What opportunities does the history give you at this point in time?

Answering these questions is not easy because it’s difficult to see whether or not something will be hot. When Bill Gates did his 10,000 hours of practice to learn programming,he might not know that it would eventually put him in a perfect position to be a software mogul. You need to have faith in something and believe that the dots will eventually connect.

The Most important Body Part

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would guess at what I thought was the correct answer.

When I was younger,I thought sound was very important to us as humans,so I said,"My ears,Mommy."

She said,"No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon."

Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt,I had contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told her,"Mommy, sight is very important to everybody,so it must be our eyes."

She looked at me and told me,"You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind."

Over the years,Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was,"No,but

you are getting smarter every year,my child."

Then last year,my Grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me,"Do you know the most important body part yet,my dear?"

I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me,"This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived your life." I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said,"My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder."

I asked,"Is it because it holds up your head?"

She replied,"No,it is because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry. Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life,my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."

Then and there I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others.

“We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite…”

I don’t want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled.

When someone looks into your eyes they should see something alive within you. Having a dream is like owning a lighthouse1 which directs you on your journey.

At every turn we come across its mystery. At each new level we become more of the person we were meant to become. In lonely times, when we pass through a storm of disappointment,we find our faith is unshaken, our strength still strong.

Believe in your faith. Set the vision before your eyes. Write down your most sincere dreams and when the opportunity comes, step into your dream. It may take one season or more, but the result is the same. Make big dreams and then go out and make them realities. The highest hopes of the dreamer are revealed with every step taken in their journey to the impossible. For a season we must protect the dream so that it can grow quietly on the inside. But if we tenderly care for our deepest expectations, slowly but surely the dream will become new life.

Dreaming is an act of faith. The light of your expectations will cast off the shadows of a disbelieving world. God has given us the dreamer as a gift to light an unbelieving world.

Find your treasure within and cherish it. Tomorrow is waiting for you to take the first step.

The Power of Your Actions

Graduation day arrived — I saw Kyle and he looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him!

Boy,sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. So,I smacked him on the back and said,"Hey,big guy, you'll be great!"

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. "Thanks," he said. As he started his speech,he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story."

I stared at my friend in disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully,I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a person's life. For better or for worse. God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others.

"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

There is no beginning or end ... Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift.
